So by now I'm sure that most of the female population in the United States has gone to see 50 Shades of Grey. My friend Daniella and I went last night, and I'm still pretty disturbed by the whole thing. I mean, when people turn a book into a movie, your expectations are pretty high as it is because you've envisioned this book in your head for sometime now and I know that you can't fit a whole book into a movie, but why can't you?
I don't know, I just feel like they focused more on the whole nakedness and sex of the film that they turned an exotic novel into a just plain awkward situation. And to be honest, the books are incredibly more detailed than the movie, by far, and that can sometimes make people uncomfortable yet what made me uncomfortable was sitting in a theater with people around watching this movie.
I think what upset me the most was how I didn't get the connection from Christian and Ana, and I feel like they completely ignored the love story from the book. Yes, it has a lot of kinky-freaky sex but in the book, there's also an incredible love story and that love story is what had over a million copies sold. Heck, it's what got me to read the series about five times.
When reading the book, you can almost feel how crazy Christian is about Ana and vise versa, in this movie.. I didn't get that at all. I got that he wanted her, but I didn't see the adoration Christian has for Ana and his uncontrollable need to be with her. And I just think that if the director and creator of the film had focused more on the love they instantly shared rather than all that awkward naked crap, I think it would have been a littler easier to watch.
But that's just my opinion, what do I know. I mean, I was really disappointed when Dakota Johnson got casted, I thought.. there is no way she can play Ana but she really captured the character spot on. She was innocent and shy but like I said, I didn't really get the connection from either of them. They completely missed was how distraught Ana was about the whole contract and her feelings for Christian. They didn't show her breaking down as much and even though it's not a huge factor, I feel it was significant because sometimes, as humans we can't control the way we feel and breaking down often helps, so why not show that in the film. I felt that in the book. I don't know, I just feel like they rushed the whole movie and missed key parts of the book that made a million fans going gaga over their relationship.
And don't even get me started on Jamie Dornan. Yes, he's incredibly hot but Christian is supposed to be this MAN who commands presence and towers over everyone like he's the ruler of his own empire.. which in the book, he's is. Yeah, I didn't get that either! I saw a boy, no offense to Dornan really, I loved him in Once Upon a Time but i'm sorry, he is no Christian Grey. Don't get me wrong, did you see him in that black suit before they were heading to his parents house? DANG! But, that doesn't change the fact that someone else should have played Christian. I mean, Dakota looked like a giant compared to Jamie and Ana is supposed to feel tiny next to Christian. I just feel like they dropped the ball. The whole piano scene where he carried her to the bedroom. Yeah, it looked like he was struggling.
Oh, and what the heck, why didn't Ana sleep in Christian's room? The entire book is about the fact that Ana is different from the other women and has Christian doing things he never did before. WHERE WAS THAT!? And the emails, that was the best part of the book, the exchanging of emails was what I looked forward to the most and even though I think they portrayed that pretty well in the film, they should have done a little more. Ugh, I guess I should title this post, 50 Shades of Disappointment but I still feel like the whole movie was more awkward than disappointing. How did y'all feel? The soundtrack was great, so that was a plus. My sister warned me about the movie but I still had to see it for myself. Now, I wish I hadn't seen it because I'm still disturbed by it. Well, I hope the next film is a little better and they capture the love they have rather than just all the weird awkward sex.. let's hope.
Well, I hope y'all have a great Tuesday. Until next time, xo!
